A Brief Introduction to Women's Studies
What Is Women's Studies?
The field of women's studies focuses on the role of women in all
facets of human endeavor. This multi-disciplinary field examines women's
lives and accomplishments in the context of history, sociology, psychology,
medicine, economics, law, and politics and highlights women's creativity
in art, music, and literature.
Students who choose a minor in Women's Studies are taught to ask
critical questions about the portrayal of women in the media, to think
analytically about women's place in American politics, to see connections
across diverse cultures, and to communicate their discoveries to others.
A minor in Women's Studies will allow you to enhance your analytical skills
and give you a broad understanding of women's contributions in the humanities
and the social sciences.

Career Opportunities
Women's Studies is a minor that compliments many majors in which
new reseach has begun to focus on women's issues and perspectives: history,
English, sociology, nursing, education, business, the sciences, and the
creative arts. An understanding of Women's Studies' issues enhances students'
preparation for careers in education, business, law, medicine, and government.
Women's Studies at Clemson

The Women's Studies Program at Clemson was begun eleven years ago, when
Dr. Judith Melton and Dr. Judith Stanton received a curriculum development
grant from the Ford Foundation through the Duke-North Carolina Women's
Research Center.
-
The first Women's Studies Course was team-taught by Drs. Melton and
Stanton in the Fall of 1987; the next semester the minor was developed
and accepted by college and university curriculum committees. We
