Ideas for Teaching He, She, and It by Marge Piercy

     
     
    • Have students read customer reviews on Amazon.com and reply/ write/post their own reviews
    •  Have class create Analytical Plot Summary of novel
    • Ask students to write 2 or 3 study guide/ reading questions for each section of the book.
    • Ask students to identify particular themes and choose one or two to specialize in.  Ask each student to keep page number logs for their themes.
      • the power of naming and of creating fictions
      • what is "human"? How do we decide? (Other)
      • man/machine-- cyborg interface, border crossing, role of technology in our lives
      • gender roles
        • family unit-- re-invention of marriage
        • motherhood
        • social construction of gender and norms of appearance, dress, etc
        • sexuality
        • cosmetic surgery
      • science  and  mysticism (mechanic vs. organic)
      • corporate hierarchy, control by multi-nationals
      • attitudes towards politics/ government
      • allusions : frankenstein, Faust
      • ecological issues
      • cyperpunk references ideas -- cyberspace, the Net, virtual reality
      • violence-- moral issues associated with
      • paralells between Yod and Joseph, Prague and Tikva
    • Characters-- ask students to pick a character that they follow and interpret for the class
    • Double Plot -- get students involved in building a comparison contrast chart about the two plots/ locations of the book
