What Our Students Say About Us

Megan and AllenMegan Gerend & Allen Buie
Major: Health Architecture
Awards:
Allen: 2005 International Healthcare Environments Award, First Place/Student Category
Megan: International Healthcare Environments Award, Honorable Mention/Student Category

As graduate students in the Health Architecture program at Clemson University, we had the opportunity to contribute to the visioning and planning of a new facility for the Sullivan Center. It was rewarding to combine an academic approach to architecture and the valuable real-life experiences of working with an actual client. The staff of the Sullivan Center supported and challenged us as designers to strive for innovation to provide positive client experiences with award-winning architecture and sustainable design. Their enthusiasm and dedication to their mission and patients made the experience worthwhile for us as designers of healthcare facilities. We look forward to the day when we return to Clemson for the opening of the new facility. It has been a privilege to participate in a project to which the client devoted so much time and energy and from which people will be able to have high-quality healthcare experiences.

Health Extern 2004-2005

As an undergraduate Public Health Science student at Clemson University, the Sullivan Center has provided me with an education far beyond the scope of measurement. The Center is a sanctuary for teachable moments, academic and interpersonal growth, and is a window into the culturally diverse profession of health care and academia. Students gain competency in a variety of areas, work directly with English and non-English speaking community members, and act professionally in problem-solving situations.

What I value most about my experience working alongside the Center staff is the heart that beats throughout this organization. It is a heart of compassion for the underserved, excellence in quality care, commitment to teaching, and priceless service. This is a magical place, a place where lives are forever changed and idealism is not abandoned.

Major: English
Spanish-English Interpreter 2003-2005

The two-and-a-half years I spent working in the Center at the Walhalla Clinic and Marietta migrant clinic was by far the most valuable and rewarding experience of my college career. Working as a Spanish-English student interpreter for physicians and nurse practitioners, I facilitated communication between health personnel and their predominately Spanish-speaking patient base, which subjected me to a large diversity of populations. Not only did my language abilities of medical Spanish greatly improve through this translating opportunity, but the health faculty at the clinic let me observe, learn, and practice many important medical processes, such as taking blood pressures, patient histories, and glucose readings.

The accolades for working with this population also extended far beyond a personal level, as I not only gained admittance to many different medical schools who were impressed with my work at the clinic, but I also received an $80,000 scholarship to attend the Medical University of South Carolina. My work at the clinic was the principal reason that I was recognized for this scholarship.

Lastly, I want to emphasize what a great group of people work at the Center. All of the faculty is so exceptionally nice and friendly!

Women for Wellness Health Fair 2004-2005

Working in the Sullivan Center to create Clemson University Women's Commision's first Women for Wellness Health Fair was an awesome and invaluable experience! I first got involved with the project during the fall 2004 semester.

Helping coordinate this fair proved to be a fantastic challenge - both for the group and for me personally. It made me realize that I have a gift and passion for event coordination. I had helped coordinate events before but never one of this magnitude. It also showed me the awesome power of networking. If it had not been for the many networks of people pulled together, the health fair would not have been the success that it was. In the end, we reached our goal! Over 1000 people showed up and benefited from the many vendors, exhibitors, displays, and speakers that were there.

To anyone that wants experience in any aspect of event coordination, to those who care about women's health and the advancement of education concerning pertinent women's health topics in the community, and to those who simply want to make a difference - getting involved in Clemson's Women's Health Fair is a remarkable opportunity to do just that. Whatever your interests, whatever your talents, whatever your passions or gifts, there is an opportunity for you to give something to this awesome event. Whether you end up volunteering or get into the planning trenches, you'll be making a valuable contribution to the Clemson community and to yourself. I also encourage everyone to attend next year's health fair. You won't want to miss it!

Gratitude

Thank you
