This past summer I had an opportunity to travel with two agronomists from the USGA’s green section. During the week of June 17th I was selected to travel with Patrick O’Brien and Chris Hartwiger to Charlotte, North Carolina for a 5 day fantasy turf camp at many of the areas premier golf facilities. During our travels we visited with golf course superintendents and club members to discuss various agronomic strategies at the respective courses. The function of the USGA green section is to act as an unbiased voice in the support or encouragement of the golf course superintendent. Throughout the visits, I was exposed to many different agronomic and political situations that forced the agronomists to thoughtfully consider the impact of their advice. What I learned most throughout the trip was that today’s superintendent is expected to worry less and less about growing grass, rather his primary job function is dealing with the political and economic aspects of the golf course and the facilities members. The experience is one I’d recommend to anyone who desires to learn about the turfgrass management industry or who aspires to become a golf course superintendent.
