While at Mid Pines golf course in Southern Pines, North Carolina I learned the usual techniques and facts about golf course management: funguses, weeds, and insects can be controlled or eradicated with a designated pesticides, poor drainage can be alleviated through aeration, and etc. However, the most important lesson I learned was that nothing can remedy a drought. There's no chemical application or piece of machinery on the market that make it rain. The only thing a superintendent can do is helplessly watch the Weather Channel with their fingers crossed and their head bowed. Despite the hardships my superiors, Mr. Fruchte, CGCS, Brian Barker, and Randall Penninger faced, they didn't let it run or ruin their lives; instead, they rolled with the punches and pressed forward. Perhaps the improvement of character, not so much the technical perspective of day to day course operation, was the most essential part of my internship.
