    Experience:

Working for a professional baseball stadium presents a different aspect of the turf industry.  Fenway Park was built in 1912 and has been the home to the Boston Red Sox for over ninety years.  The age of the facilities is overshadowed by the legacy that Fenway Park has to Americans, especially baseball fans.  Some of the greatest players in the history of the game played at Fenway including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Ted Williams.  I was fortunate enough to be the intern responsible for creating and maintaining the infield mowing patterns which has become the trademark for David Mellor throughout the industry.  Fertilizer applications are made before home stands.  Potassium applications are made to promote turf vigor and stress tolerance and consistent calcium applications are made to counter the high sodium present in the irrigation water.  Nitrogen applications are made well before games so that excessive growth does not become damaged from traffic stress.  There are eight college interns on the crew of 25 people, both full time and part time staff.  The crew was a collection of some of the most well rounded individuals that I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  David selected turf students for his crew from Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia, Mississippi State, U Mass, Missouri, and of course Clemson.  More opportunities for learning resulted without the luxuries of modern technology that many other ballparks depend on for turf management.  Being involved with the important aspects of maintaining Fenway Park was very rewarding and will be an experience that I will never forget for the rest of my life.
