"The grass will grow itself, but it's the people
you have to worry about." -- Mike Echols. Professors and textbooks due
a magnificent job informing me when, where, and why I should perform
golf course maintenance practices; however, both do not tell of the
countless hours and fatigue associated with completing these tasks.
I'm not trying to discredit the importance of a higher education, but
the classroom has never taught me how to deal with a summer intern who
has just dropped a $3,000 greens mower into a green side bunker. Nor
has a book or professor ever taught me how a crewmember feels after
pushing and shoveling aeration cores for eight consecutive hours
during the heat of summer. The only way I have learned these valuable,
irreplaceable lessons is through first hand experience during summer
internships. Chris Ryder, golf course superintendent , and CJ Penrose,
asst. superintendent, at Sankaty Head Golf Club enabled me to witness
the human element of golf course maintenance.
