The Organization of UniSouth Genetics, Inc.

UniSouth Genetics, Inc. (USG), a nonprofit membership corporation, was formed in 1997 by the Foundation Seed and/or Crop Improvement Agencies of the member states with the following mission:
"To serve the seedsmen of our area by providing profitable alternatives
for accessing and marketing genetic materials."
In order to achieve this goal we are:
  • Cooperating with plant breeding programs in both the private and public sectors.
  • Obtaining the production and the distribution rights for new varieties, and
  • Developing marketing plans to enhance the value of new varieties.
UniSouth members are supported by a network of 49 licensees in 11 states. Licensees are seedsmen and local seed companies involved in the production, conditioning, wholesaling and retailing of quality soybean and wheat seed.

The expertise of over 150 years of combined experience is working to bring the "USG" brand of soybeans and soft red winter wheat to the marketplace.

  • What is the relationship between USG and the breeding programs in the member states?   USG members have long-standing working relationships with many established breeding programs and are actively involved in the evaluation of new materials from these programs. Our goal is to develop marketing arrangements for new materials that will benefit both the breeder and the licensee.

  • What is the benefit of utilizing USG rather than a traditional variety release? USG provides a marketing plan, with controlled production, which makes for more consistent seed supply. USG also supports testing, promotion and collection of royalties and technology fees.

  • Why would a releasing institution use USG for release of genetics or traits? USG has a widespread sales area with established market share. A marketing agreement with Monsanto enables USG to participate in the marketing of new technology traits. Our capability to document sales and return royalty payments from many points of sale make USG an attractive marketing vehicle to Universities and private companies.

  • What UniSouth varieties are currently available for 2002 planting in SC?

USG 3209 Wheat

USG 3209 is a high yielding, moderately early maturing variety adapted to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. USG 3209 is resistant to powdery mildew, leaf and stem rust and Hessian Fly biotypes  GP, B, and E. Compact plants (32 inches) have good straw strength. USG 3209 is moderately resistant   to wheat spindle streak, leaf glume blotch, and barley yellow dwarf. USG 3209 has consistently been one of the highest yielding varieties throughout its area of adaptation. Due to early spring growth and potential freeze damage, USG 3209 should be planted in the later half of the planting season in its more northern areas of adaptation.
