Cone E. S. Gets A New Look!

Students, teachers, parents and staff from Cone E.S. and the SC Botanical Garden along with the Campbell Young Leader Corp. worked for three days to beautify and update Cone's landscape image! Here are some fun photos of our work days...

Cone E.S. - Before the trees and shrubs were added.  This is the "backyard" of the school.

Classes from Kindergarten to fifth grade joined Botanical Garden staff in planting trees and shrubs around the school!

Garden staff members Sue Watts ( SCBG Education Specialist) and Amy Craddock (Sprouting Wings Coordinator) are working hard mixing in soil amendments to the planting holes.
With hundreds of trees & shrubs to plant in hard Carolina clay soils, having  a big  auger to do the work make our three day planting spree somewhat easier. Some of the plants we added to the school grounds include:
  • Fothergilla gardenii
  • Hosta 'Francee'
  • St. John's Wort
  • Chinese Fringe Tree
  • Viburnum
  • Virginia Sweetspire
Planting so many trees & shrubs in February in South Carolina requires lots of mulch!  We had to spread mountains of it, but it was fun!!

Students work on moving the "mountain" with Botanical Garden Director, John Kelly.
