| What
is Sprouting Wings?
Sprouting Wings connects children with nature by utilizing gardening, nature exploration, environmental stewardship and mentoring in a unique after-school program. Combining the resources of the South Carolina Botanical Gardenwith Clemson University student volunteers has created a program that serves children at area schools who would not otherwise have access to this type of enrichment program. |

The program began in 1993, when a small group of Clemson University faculty, Botanical Garden staff and university students, along with children from Central Elementary, began planting trees on the elementary school’s campus. The program continues to serve the children of Central Elementary School by transporting them to The South Carolina Botanical Garden each week where they work and learn in the Sprouting Wings greenhouse, participate in the Garden’s twice-annual plant sales, explore the 270 acre Garden and make friends with the University students who greet them each week. |
| In 1996, the program expanded to include York Place, a residential treatment facility for children with emotional and behavioral disorders. Utilizing the principals of horticultural therapy, Sprouting Wings strives to involve the children at York Place in garden related activities that will enhance their recreational therapy goals such as teamwork and positive peer interactions. Over 150-acres including a pond and woodlands make York Place an ideal place to explore. Since the program landed on campus, the children have added a nature trail, a raised bed garden, and beautified their cottages with landscape plantings. | ![]() |

In the fall of 2000, Sprouting Wings joined the Campbell Young Leaders Corporation in their after-school programs initiative for schools in the city of Greenville. Children in second grade at Cone Primary school and those in the third grade at Sans Souci participate in Sprouting Wings as part of the encompassing after-school programs which include academic tutoring as well as enrichment activities. |
