New Featured Artist On Display
July 10
Beginning July 10 and on display through September, the New Featured Artist in the Gallery of the Fran Hansen Discovery Center will be Suzanne Edwards de Vargas, a biologist, educator and artist. A native of South Carolina, Ms. Edwards de Vargas has used quilting to teach an appreciation for wildlife and art. She draws from her interest in and travels to South America, as well as her environmental studies in the rainforest, to create colorful, intricate quilts featuring native birds found in Bolivia’s Curichi Cuajo, or Heron Pool.
Gallery open Monday – Saturday, 10:00am – 4:00pm.
Location: Fran Hansen Discovery Center Gallery

Planning A Fall Vegetable Garden
August 21
South Carolina’s climate gives us plenty of time to grow both cool- and warm-season vegetables and herbs, and fall gardens are often very productive. Plan and plant now for a continuing fall harvest of specialty lettuces, greens, edible flowers, and herbs. We’ll talk about how to select vegetables and herbs that do well in autumn, winter, and beyond. Create a beautiful, enjoyable, and productive “kitchen garden” by focusing on successive cropping and small-scale cultivation this fall.
Fee: $15 ($10 for SCBG members & volunteers)
10:00am – 12:00 noon
Location: Nature Learning Center

Education Director Lisa Wagner will share her experiences gardening and learning from other gardeners in the Upstate.

Harvest Moon Night Hike
September 15
The full moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox is called the Harvest Moon. It is often particularly luminous because of the moon’s position relative to the horizon. Join naturalist Lisa Wagner for an evening hike in the garden. Experience the sights, sounds and sensations of a full moon night. Please wear walking shoes and clothing appropriate for walking in the woods. Flashlights are not needed.
Fee: $7 per family (up to 5) ($5 for SCBG members & volunteers)
