Toluca
Toluca, Mexico
Iron - Group IA - Coarse Octahedrite
Thousands of years ago a large meteorite disintegrated in the Earths atmosphere, scattering thousands of fragments over what is now the village of Xiquipilco. Early 19th century records note that the local people used them to make various farm tools. It wasn't until 1776 that scientists recognized the site as a meteorite impact. The meteorite solidified 4.6 billion years ago and after breaking off of its parent body, drifted in space for about 600 million ago. A total of about three tons of material has come from Toluca. The polished specimen weighs 22.5 grams.
