List of courses that meet the "14 hour rule" added.

Awards have been increased for students that we have detected as being eligible for the 2007-08 academic year. If you feel you are eligible and have not been notified, please send and email to finaid@clemson.edu.

Enhanced LIFE Scholarship, Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and Hope Scholarship

As has been reported by the media and other sources, the South Carolina General Assembly has passed legislation that enhances the value of LIFE and Palmetto Fellows awards for students majoring in math and science disciplines.  Also, the maximum award for the Hope Scholarship has been increased.  These changes are effective beginning in the Fall of 2007.

Basic eligibility requirements for the enhanced awards are:

Palmetto Fellows – in addition to the base Palmetto Fellows requirements:

  • Recipients with at least 30 hours, and who, as a freshman,  earned 14 hours worth of math and science (at least 6 hours math and 6 hours science with at least 1 lab - see note in red below), and who are math and science majors will receive an additional amount of up to $3,300 for a maximum of $10,000.
  • Palmetto Fellows with at least 30 hours, but do not meet the conditions above, will receive an additional amount of up to $800 for a maximum of $7,500.
  • Entering freshmen, regardless of major, will receive a maximum of $6,700.

LIFE Scholarship – in addition to the base LIFE Scholarship requirements:

  • Recipients with over 30 hours, and who, as a freshman,  earned 14 hours worth of math and science (at least 6 hours math and 6 hours science with at least 1 lab - see note in red below), and who are math and science majors will receive an additional amount of up to $2,500 for a maximum of $7,500.
  • Entering freshmen, regardless of major, and upperclassmen who do not meet the above conditions, will receive a maximum award of $5,000.

Hope Scholarship

  • The value of the Hope Scholarship, which is a freshman-year-only award, has increased from $2,650 to $2,800 for the year.

Timing of Awards

Because of the complexity of these new regulations, we (and other institutions in the state) are working with the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education to fully define eligibility qualifications.  Clemson majors that have been approved for the enhanced awards are listed at the bottom of this page. The table will be updated if additional majors are approved.

In addition to defining eligible majors, individual courses must be identified that meet the 14 hours of math and science during the freshman year requirement.  Please note that current interpretation of the new legislation precludes students from ever becoming eligible for the enhancements if the 14 hour requirement is not met by the end of the freshman year.  AP credits and dual enrollment courses (college credit courses taken while still in high school) can satisfy the 14 hour rule.

7/31/2007 - The SC Commission on Higher Education has waived the 14 hour rule for the 2007-08 academic year for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Entering freshmen for fall 2007, however, should be prepared to meet the requirements prior to the fall of 2008.

As soon as these issues have been defined, we will post the information on our web site.  Students will not likely see the enhanced awards (other than the Hope Scholarship increase) reflected in their awards until early fall.  As a result, students who receive the enhanced awards will receive a refund from the University if all fees are satisfied. We are anticipating that the awards will be posted to financial aid accounts mid-September.
