Building Blockage

When a building near the radar is taller than the tower on which the antenna sits, it can block the beam, casting a long, narrow shadow in the scan. In the following reflectivity image from HGX Houston, TX, precipitation in the north and light bird migration are visible. However, notice the narrow, blank space to the southwest of the radar. This feature is characteristic of a building blocking the beam from scanning the atmosphere beyond it. This narrow, blank space appears consistently on imagery from this NEXRAD station.
