Chaff

Military planes deploy a metallic dust known as 'chaff' to diffuse their radar signatures and mask their presence on radar. Pilots frequently practice laying chaff trails over open ocean, although these trails often drift over land with the unintended consequence of altering weather radar scans. Below is a radar scan from MLB Melbourne, FL showing some light bird and insect movement and three chaff trails to the southwest of the station.
