SC LIFE COMMUNITY-BASED RESEARCH PROJECTS

We partner with teachers and students in selected schools throughout South Carolina to guide them through unique research projects that focus on their local communities. SC LIFE will assist one group of schools each year to complete their own Community-Based Research Project.

Ongoing and previous SC LIFE Community-Based Research Projects:

• EMRGE (Ethics in Medical Research and Genetic Engineering), Anderson District 5 - 2009-2010

NEW this year!   SC LIFE is collaborating with Anderson District 5, the  Rutland Institute for Ethics and the SC DNA Learning Center on our latest community-based research project, EMRGE.  EMRGE will create a curricular framework for high school science courses that allows students to identify and explore connections between advanced research in areas such as stem cells, genetic engineering, and nuclear applications and their intended and unintended “ripple effects” in economic, medical, and societal spheres. 

• Apples to Water, School District of Oconee County - 2008-2009

Teachers and students from the Oconee County School District researched topics relevant to the past, present and future of Oconee County: apples, rail roads and mills, lake ecology and natural resources and tourism.

• The Catawba River Project, Rawlison Road Middle School of Rock Hill School District 3 - 2007-2008

Rawlison Road MS teachers and students focused on the Catawba River history, uses and importance to the surrounding communities.

• The Rise and Fall of Tobacco in the Lake City Market Area, Florence County School District 3 - 2005-2006, 2007

  Our first partnership, with Florence County School District 3, produced an interactive DVD that documented the year-long research efforts of students in kindergarten through high school. Teachers and their students selected subtopics of the district-wide project for individual and classroom research.  Students conducted recorded interviews with local families and subject experts, explored local landforms and waterways, constructed models, and communicated their research results to their classmates, schools and community.
