SC LIFE - Life Sciences Education and Outreach for South Carolina

Since its start in 1998 with an award from Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the SC LIFE project has created a statewide science network that serves South Carolina’s students and teachers.  SC LIFE connects Clemson’s research scientists with students of all ages.  K-12 teachers take life sciences graduate courses designed for their schedules and needs. They use SC LIFE equipment  and lesson plans in their classrooms, and engage students in research projects in their local communities. Academically talented high school students complete summer research projects with Clemson research scientists.  Hundreds of middle and high school students test their knowledge at Clemson’s annual Biology Merit Exam and  participate in laboratory field trips to the SC DNA Learning Center.  Undergraduate students at Clemson University, Claflin University, Benedict College and Morris College engage in research during the academic year and gather each Spring for a Research Colloquium.  All participants use SC LIFE’s online resources for teaching and research.

SC LIFE is supported by three awards totaling $5,400,000 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program and additional external funding
