Summer Science Program

The Summer Science Program  is a one week residential program hosted by the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) for academically gifted rising ninth and tenth graders.  The program is designed to introduce students to scientific principles, demonstrate their applications to the real world, and acquaint students with career opportunities.  Each participating professor leads a group of students as deeply into his or her specialty as possible during a week of intensive study that includes lab and field experience.  There are four different week long summer sessions focusing on everything from entomology and botany to chemistry and physics.  Apply now for next summer and find out about tuition and scholarship opportunities!

The HHMI award allows SC LIFE to send one or two Clemson University  professors to participate each summer.  Dr. Greg Yarrow, a wildlife biologist in the Forestry and Natural Resources Department, and Dr. Don Manley, an entomologist in the Entomology, Soils, and Plant Sciences Department, have been chosen to represent Clemson University for the past five summers.

During the summer 2003 session, Dr. Yarrow's group studied wildlife conservation in South Carolina by looking at the physiographic and geological formations that give rise to different soils which leads to different vegetation communities and wildlife habitats.  The group also traveled across the state to learn about the biology and management of several South Carolina animals including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, black bear, American alligator, and white-tailed deer.

During the summer 2004 session, Dr. Manley's group learned about insects; their importance, their biology, their internal and external morphology, and their taxonomy.  The group went to several different habitats to collect insects and learned about the characteristics of beneficial and pest insects and the importance of integrated pest management.
