Born in Otavalo, and raised in Quito, Ecuador, Dr. Unda graduated from the University of Geneva Medical School in Switzerland where he obtained the MD degree and speaks French fluently. He also obtained a PhD in Pneumology. Dr. Unda practiced 35 years of Internal Medicine in Quito, Ecuador, and is now retired. Dr. Unda has conducted Medical Research at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. Unda was a consultant for the development of the HPV vaccine in Ecuador and developed a successful Continuous Medical Spanish Interpreters Course (COMSICO) at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, at the professional level. Unda is looking forward to establishing this course at Clemson’s Language Department in the nearest future, in alliance with the L&IH courses.
Unda is certified by the California State Assembly for interpreting services and Kaiser Permanente: Certification of Completion for Curriculum Development of Educational Interpreting and training, his expertise includes culturally and linguistically appropriate translation and interpretation. H has lectured on topics such as Hispanic cultural competency, Latino health beliefs, Pharmacopoeia and many medical-educational issues affecting Hispanics. As a trainer in medical Spanish interpretation for health and human services, he helps to bridge the gap between English-speaking health providers and Hispanic immigrants. Unda has taught Spanish 101,104,201 and 202 in Clemson.
