Artículo

Abstract: Ecuador experienced many economic and political difficulties during the 1990’s. The government, in its efforts to avoid hyperinflation, declared the U.S. dollar the official currency in 2000. This paper presents a brief history of the pre-dollarization crisis, followed by a discussion of the effects of dollarization. Finally, a survey of middle class Ecuadorians residing in and around the city of Otavalo will provide their views on this process and how their lives have been affected.
