Dr. Claire Gaudiani

Dr. Gaudiani is currently Senior Research Scholar at the Yale Law School. She served as
President of Connecticut College for thirteen years (1988-2001). Under her leadership the
college quintupled its endowment and rose in the influential U.S. News and World Report survey
from No. 41 to the mid-20's. Applications for admission rose a total of 40 percent over the last
five years and minority enrollments increased to 13%.

Her strategic leadership has been recognized in several ways: by the publication of a
Connecticut College case study by the Harvard School of Education, her appointment as a 50th
Anniversary Fulbright Fellow to Morocco, her receipt of ten honorary doctoral degrees,
numerous invitations to provide Congressional testimony, and her election in 1999 to the
American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Gaudiani served for five years as the volunteer president of the non-profit New London
Development Corporation. She continues to serve on the Board of the corporation, which is
dedicated to building the tax base, creating jobs and improving the quality of life for all citizens
of New London. Dr. Gaudiani has served on the boards of numerous for-profit and not-for-profit
enterprises including The Henry Luce Foundation, MBIA Inc., the Shubert Theatre, the
Connecticut Center for School Change, Connecticut Legal Services Advisory Board, Public
Radio International, and Citizens Bank.

Author of six books and monographs and more than 80 articles, Dr. Gaudiani is a frequent
speaker both nationally and internationally on topics related to education, philanthropy, ethics,
and the role of colleges in civil society. Her most recent book is The Greater Good: How
Philanthropy Drives the American Economy and Can Save Capitalism (Henry Holt and Company,
