Chair of the School of Architecture
Clemson University is a comprehensive research institution located mid-way between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC in the Northwest region of South Carolina. Clemson enjoys a high ranking among American public universities and the School of Architecture, nearing its centennial year, continues to gain prominence through high national rankings and numerous national and international awards received by its faculty and students. The School is seeking a new Chair and solicits applications and nominations for the position with duties beginning in August 2010.
The School of Architecture is uniquely situated within the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, which offers a diverse environment for creative initiatives and interdisciplinary collaborations in ten departments. Allied disciplines within the college offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in landscape architecture, the visual arts, construction science and management, city and regional planning, historic preservation and real estate development. The cross-disciplinary nature of the College enriches the undergraduate and graduate programs and is exemplified by the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Planning, Design and the Built Environment. As the only architecture school in the state, Clemson receives significant support from the profession and the Board of Architecture, as well as from a large body of loyal alumni and friends.
The Richard A. McMahan Fund for Excellence, one of the largest long-term endowments to a school of architecture in the country, generously supports and bolsters the School's vision to advance its national stature by promoting design and academic research, while preparing students for diverse roles in architecture through interdisciplinary collaboration. The School's Fluid Campus which is currently comprised of centers in Charleston, SC; Genoa, Italy; Barcelona, Spain and Clemson, SC provides a unique framework for faculty and students to work in diverse physical, political and cultural settings with each location providing distinct pedagogical and research opportunities. The School will break ground on a new building at its Clemson campus in the Spring of 2010 that will house the architecture program along with allied departments in landscape, real estate, planning, and the visual arts.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess a professional degree in architecture and maintain professional architectural registration with the ideal candidate also possessing a Ph.D. in architecture or allied discipline. Candidates will also be expected to show accomplishments in nationally or internationally recognized scholarship and/or practice, and have a record of distinguished teaching that merits appointment at the tenured rank of Full Professor. He/she must show strong academic leadership, including program stewardship and support of faculty and students; excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain the confidence and respect of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the professional community.
Responsibilities
The Chair will be responsible for all administrative aspects of the program across its four centers (Charleston, SC; Genoa, Italy; Barcelona, Spain and Clemson, SC), the management and development of resources, the advancement of research and scholarship, the promotion of faculty and student development and to attend to all matters related to NAAB accreditation, NCARB, and IDP program for students. As the representative of the School, the Chair is expected to continue the tradition of acting as a liaison to the professional community including the AIA and the State of South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners and if appointed will be expected to pursue and/or maintain professional architectural registration in the United States.
